a barrage of gun shots rang out from the streets of brooklyn. the gun battle the with police and an attempted car thief ends with bullets covering the street this morning the suspect is facing very serious charges. it's 6:00 a.m., and eyewitness news is live. also an atv crashes on the hempstead turnpike, sending four people to the hospital. details on that as well. >> reporter: good morning, everybody.

nothing to slow us down. a high of 83 degrees. that's above average, and i will have the accuweather forecast in a few minutes. rob? >> thank you very much. a man injured during a shootout with police is facing several charges including four counts of attempted murder of a police officer. that's after he opened fire on the street. yesterday the streets in bushwick were covered in 80 shell casings. police say a suspect fired on them, and they returned fire, chasing the suspect down the street. the officers fired 70 shots in all, and the suspect entered 11 rounds. >> we rolled off the bed, and we were like stay down. it seemed like it was right outside of our window, which was it. >> it just kept coming, kept coming.

it wouldn't end. >> the suspect in all of this, 27-year-old gerald harris was struck once in the leg, and again this morning facing serious charges. four people are are recovering after being involved in an atv crash only. it was right outside of the entrance to hofstra university. the atv crashed into a nissan ultimate. those four who were hurt were taken to the hospital, and the police shut down the westbound lanes of the hempstead turnpike for several hours to investigation. there's a $50,000 reward for the search of suspecteds who killed a beloved officer in the town north of chicago. police are looking for any clue thacked lead them to the killers killer -- that could

lead them to the killer in this case. the victim was a 30-year veteran from the force and just a month away from retiring. police hope new clues can be found as families return to their homes for labor day weekend. a in bryant park a tree crashed down on the crowded park yesterday afternoon. middle of the day. five people in all were hurt, and others rushed in to help. people all over the park came to the aid of those hit by the tree. eyewitnesses heard the tree crack, and suddenly it was on the ground, just inch from the victims' heads. >> no warning. >> it was too late to yell or something. >> as it dropped, people were screaming. >> the five who were hurt suffered only major injuries,

and that's the good news. the nypd went in, cut up the tree trunk, and they are trying to figure out why. testing is complete in the bronx where the legionnaires' bacteria tests were done. five of the buildings had positive preliminary tests. there's been four cases of the disease at the melrose houses other the last 6 one was diagnosed earlier this week. the death of a couple and their two young sons on the

problem at the u.s. open, wow. thousands of migrants are being welcome into hungary this morning it comes after germany and austria offered asylum to help refugees from syria, iraq, and austria. the migrants are trying to flee the countries that have been are ravaged by war. some of the horrific scenes you saw from this, a little boy's body washing up on shore and his father burying his wife and two young kids, it's serious and so good to see some countries respond. rescue efforts will

6:11, and welcome back. rescue efforts will continue this morning for the blue whale tangled in a fishing net off the coast of california. it's a 75-foot long whale spotted yesterday in the water. if they are able to free the animal, and we are hoping they will. it will be a milestone because no one has ever been able to successfully untangled nets

we will have more own the weekend forecast including your getaway forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you. new defails in a wild shootout with police and a suspected car thief, wanted for shooting a man in brooklyn and emptying 11 rounds firing on the cops, and of course the cops fired back. christine thorne is live from kings county hospital where the suspect is recovering this morning. >> reporter: 27-year-old gerald harris is recovering here after being shot in the leg, and police say he is responsible for starting this wild shootout that resulted in 70 shots being fired by responding officers. harris was originally wanted for shooting a man who was loading up his car. he was hiding in the man's truck attempting to steal it when the man found harris in the trunk of his car.

harris shot him and fled. the victim gave the police a very good description of harris. eight offices respond, canvassed the area, harris ducked behind a car and opened fire on officers. officers returned fire, and then he ran off, running at two other officers who returned fire. and people in the neighborhood said they have never heard so much gunfire before. >> it was consecutive. one after another after another after another. i looked outside and saw the police presence, and i was like what's going summon. >> reporter: police say harris emptied 11 shot the during the entire thing, taking place in bushwick. they believe the gun was stolen out of florida. live outside of the kings county hospital, kristin thorne, channel 7 eyewitness news. pope francis says he's filled with hope to meet all americans as he gets ready to

travel to the u.s. he got a preview of what kind of audience is awaiting him when he visits later this month. an audience in chicago got the opportunity to speak to the pope through a little virtual reality. pope francis spoke one-on-one with an american nun. federal agents are now involved in the investigation into a fire that left a planned parenthood clinic badly damaged, and fire marshals determined it was arson. flames broke out yesterday in eastern washington, and the spokeswoman for planned parenthood said the damage is so serious, the clinic will probably be closed for a month or more. the fbi is involved because of the history of the antiabortion protesters targeting the buildings. residents of puerto rico cannot vote for the president

of the united states, and that's been under much debate on the island for years, but nonetheless, hillary clinton campaigned there. she said preventing them from voting for president makes no sense, and marco rubio has also well. and clinton's visit comes as new york governor cuomo prepares to lead a special delegation for puerto rico for a 1-night visit. we will cover the trip, and reports will begin on monday. a county clerk in kentucky who is sitting in jail for not signing same-sex marriage licenses insists the licenses issued out of her office while

she's in the cooler are not legal. deputy clerks are issuing the licenses to several gay couple the, but kim davis says because she didn't authorize the licenses, they are invalid. her attorney said davis is passing her time in the jail by "doing bible studies with herself." a connecticut man who spent a decade behind bars is now free. bob bob johnson is first time since he was 16 years old after a judge in new haven dismissed the murder case against him. johnson was sentenced to 38 years in prison for the murder over a man in 2006, but the connecticut innocent projects said it was through threats and intimidation johnson falsely confessed to murder. >> we believe it's a widespread problem.

welcome back. an airport in southeast tennessee is looking for a new solution to a lot of problems. nine sink holes have opened up on or around a runway. the they have had sink holes before, but never in this way. the're runway is considered stable, and the airport can continue to operate, but officials are trying to figure out what is causing the sink holes to open up and how to make sure they don't come back. there. amy freeze --

there's an escalating battle over the fate of new york city's homeless. city forces swept in to remove dozens of homeless camps, but many of them have already returned. dave evans has more on what seems to be a game of cat and mouse. >> reporter: below the sheraton expressway on the east side of the bronx, city crews cleaned up a couple of tons of debris. this was a homeless encampment, and neighbors complained for months. >> i'm glad that someone brought light to the situation. it's an ongoing problem, and a lot of people will be happy with this change they did. >> reporter: on wednesday police brass announced there were 80 homeless encampments across the city.

this one in the bronx was the late toast be cleaned up. six or seven homeless people were living here, and they have to find a new place to call home this location at 150th street in the bronx is where the mayor visited on wednesday. the crews put up the fence, and the homeless lingered nearby. >> it's gone, it's lost. i'm starting from scratch. >> reporter: are you upset about that? are they upset? >> yeah, but what can we do? it's not the man's fault. >> reporter: this man, called william, will not go to a shelter. officials have tried. they have been offered all kinds of intervention. >> they should not be down there because it's trespassing, but they are not bothering nobody. i feel bad for them. they have no place to live. >> reporter: others worry they will go to another another neighborhood. >> i hope it's not just hushing hem in somewhere else and they

facing a long list of some very serious charges. hi, christine. >> reporter: hi, rob and tony. jerome harris is recovering here after being shot in the leg, and police say he is responsible for starting this really just wild shootout, resulting in 70 shots being fired by responding officers. harris was originally wanted for shooting a man who was loading up his car. harris was hiding in the man's trump when he was attempting to steal it. harris allegedly shot him and ran. the victim gave police a good flip of harris, and it was early friday morning in bushwick. they spotted harris, he ran behind a car and opened fire at officers, and officers returned fire, and then he apparently ran off again, running into two other officers, shooting at

7:56. we are learning new details about the suspect accused of brooklyn. the suspect was wounded when officers fired back. kristin thorne is live in east flatbush with the latest. kristin? >> reporter: rob and toni, 27- year-old gerald harris is recovering here after being shot in the leg, and police say he shot times during a confrontation friday morning in bushwick.

harris tried to steal someone's car and allegedly shot at the victim before running away. police say because they had a good description of harris from the victim, they were able to track him down quickly. he ran behind a car, opening fire on eight officers that were there, around jefferson avenue. the officers, of course, returned fire. harrison ran away, shooting at other officers. they opened fire, and eventually harris was shot in the leg. he's being charged with four counts of attempted murder on a police officer. six officers were taken to the hospital with ringing in their ears, but they are expected to be okay. i'm kristin thorne, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> kristin, thank you. new york city park officials will be in bryant park inspecting a tree that suddenly snapped in half yesterday afternoon. people all over came to the aid of those people who were hit by the tree. it was yesterday around 4:00 in

the afternoon, and witnesses said they heard the tree crack, and suddenly it was on the ground, just inches from some of the victims' heads. five people were taken to the hospital, and they will be fine. >> there's renewed called for drone regulations after a scary moment at the u.s. it tennis match, and that drone crashed into the empty stands, and luckily no one was hurt, but now 26-year-old daniel verley has been charged with wreckless endangerment. the high school science teacher was operating it from the opposite side of citi field. he turned himself over to police after it crashed. it's scary. you think there's more protected air space there during the big event like the u.s. open. >> did he mean to go into the tennis thing? it said he was way over at citi field. >> he said he lost control of it. >> maybe he didn't mean to.
